Amazon ASIN Number – What It Is and How to Get an ASIN for Your Amazon Product

What is an Amazon ASIN?

Amazon ASIN stands for Amazon Standard Identification Number. It is a unique 10-character code used by Amazon to identify and organize products in its catalog. Every product listed on Amazon has an ASIN that helps track inventory, reviews, and product listings.

Amazon manages hundreds of millions of products. To keep everything organized, it assigns a unique ASIN to every product in its catalog.

If you sell on Amazon, understanding ASINs is essential. You need the right ASIN to list a product, manage your inventory, and show up in search results.

This guide explains what an ASIN is, why it matters, how to find one, and how to create one for a new product.

What Is an ASIN Number?

An ASIN is a 10-character alphanumeric code that Amazon assigns to every product in its catalog. It always starts with the letter B, except for books where it matches the ISBN.

Amazon uses ASINs to keep its product database accurate and consistent. When multiple sellers list the same product, they all share the same ASIN. This keeps reviews, ratings, and product details in one place.

ASINs help Amazon with:

  • Product catalog organization – each product has exactly one ASIN
  • Inventory tracking – sellers and Amazon warehouses use ASINs to manage stock
  • Customer reviews – all reviews for a product are grouped under one ASIN
  • Search results – Amazon's algorithm uses ASINs to display the right product for a search query

Why ASIN Is Important for Amazon Sellers

For sellers, the ASIN is the foundation of everything you do on Amazon. Without the correct ASIN, you cannot list a product, run ads, or track performance.

Product Discoverability

Your product appears in Amazon search only when it has a valid ASIN correctly linked to the catalog.

Catalog Organization

Using an existing ASIN avoids duplicate listings, which can split reviews and hurt your ranking.

Advertising Targeting

Amazon PPC campaigns target by ASIN. You can run product-level ads only with a valid ASIN.

Inventory Management

Amazon uses ASINs to track your stock levels in FBA warehouses and seller-fulfilled inventory.

How to Find an ASIN on Amazon

There are three simple ways to find the ASIN for any Amazon product.

1

Check the Product URL

Open the product page on Amazon. Look at the URL in your browser. The ASIN appears after/dp/ in the URL. For example:amazon.in/dp/B08N5WRWNW— the ASIN here is B08N5WRWNW.

2

Check the Product Information Section

Scroll down on any Amazon product page to the Product Information or Technical Details section. You will see the ASIN listed there directly.

3

Find ASIN Inside Amazon Seller Central

Log in to Seller Central and go to Manage Inventory. The ASIN is displayed in the product listing column next to each SKU. You can also search by product name or barcode to find the associated ASIN.

How to Create a New ASIN on Amazon

If your product does not exist on Amazon yet, you need to create a new listing. Amazon will automatically generate the ASIN when you do this.

1

Log in to Seller Central

Go to sellercentral.amazon.in or .com and sign in.

2

Click Add Product

In the Inventory menu, click Add a Product.

3

Choose "I'm adding a product not sold on Amazon"

Search for your product. If it does not appear, select this option to create a new listing.

4

Select the correct product category

Choose the most relevant category. This affects your fees and discoverability.

5

Enter all product details

Fill in the product title, brand, description, images, and price.

6

Add UPC or EAN barcode

Enter the product's barcode. Amazon uses this to verify it is a unique product.

7

Submit the listing

Once submitted and approved, Amazon automatically generates a unique ASIN for your product.

Note: You do not choose your own ASIN. Amazon assigns it automatically after your listing is approved. Never try to reuse or copy an ASIN from another product.

Best Practices for Managing ASINs

Managing your ASINs well keeps your listings healthy and avoids account issues.

Avoid duplicate listings

Before creating a new ASIN, always search Amazon first. Creating a duplicate can get your listing removed.

Use the correct UPC or EAN

Always use a legitimate barcode that belongs to your brand. Fake or borrowed barcodes can lead to listing suppression.

Optimize your product title and images

A well-optimized ASIN ranks higher in search. Use clear, keyword-rich titles and high-resolution images.

Monitor ASIN performance

Regularly check your ASIN's sales velocity, Buy Box status, and review score in Seller Central.
