What is Amazon FBA?

Fulfilled by Amazon (FBA) is a service where Amazon stores your inventory in its fulfillment centres, then picks, packs, and ships orders to customers on your behalf. Amazon also handles customer service and returns for FBA orders. The key advantage is access to Amazon Prime customers and the reliability of Amazon's logistics network. In return, Amazon charges a fulfillment fee per unit shipped, on top of the standard referral fee (commission) for each sale. Understanding all these costs is critical before deciding whether a product is viable on Amazon.

How Amazon Referral Fees Work

Amazon's referral fee is a percentage of the selling price deducted automatically at the time of each sale. Rates differ by product category — electronics are charged 5–8%, while most categories including Home & Kitchen, Health, and Toys are charged 15%. Apparel and fashion carry a higher rate of 17%. The referral fee applies to the total selling price including shipping charges (if you charge separately), but Amazon India has specific rules about which components of the transaction price are subject to fees. Always check Amazon's official fee schedule for your exact category code since rates can be updated.

How to Calculate Amazon Profit

Many sellers make the mistake of calculating profit as Selling Price minus Product Cost. True Amazon profit requires deducting all cost layers:

Net Profit = Selling Price − Total Cost

Total Cost = COGS + Inbound Shipping + Packaging + Referral Fee + FBA Fee + Ad Cost

Profit Margin = Net Profit ÷ Selling Price × 100

Break Even ROAS = Selling Price ÷ Total Cost

Worked Example

Price ₹1,000 · COGS ₹400 · Shipping ₹40 · Packaging ₹30 · Referral ₹150 · FBA ₹120 · Ads ₹120

Total Cost = ₹860 · Net Profit = ₹140 · Margin = 14%

Note: The default example in the calculator uses ₹790 total cost as shown above since shipping (₹40) + packaging (₹30) are included in the default inputs.

Why Profit Margin Matters on Amazon

A product with a slim margin has no buffer for the cost pressures every Amazon seller encounters: competitor price drops, rising ad costs, seasonal storage fee increases, product returns, and stock liquidation. Sellers targeting at least 20% net margin have room to run promotions, test new ad campaigns, and respond to competition without immediately going into loss. Products below 10% margin are vulnerable — a single month of high ad spend or elevated returns can wipe out profitability entirely. Use this calculator to find the minimum selling price needed to hit your target margin before you source or list a product.

Ways to Increase Amazon Profit

Practical levers to improve your margin on Amazon.

Reduce sourcing cost

Negotiate with suppliers for better rates at higher quantities. Even a 10% reduction in product cost meaningfully improves margin.

Improve packaging efficiency

Reducing dimensional weight of your package can lower FBA fulfillment fees, which are calculated by size tier.

Optimise advertising spend

Target high-converting keywords, use negative keyword lists, and shift budget to campaigns with the best TACoS to reduce ad cost per sale.

Increase selling price incrementally

Test small price increases (5–10%). If conversion rate holds, your profit per unit improves significantly without any cost change.
