GST Inclusive vs GST Exclusive

GST Exclusive price is the base price of a product before adding tax. This is the price you typically set as the selling price when creating a listing. GST is added on top to arrive at the final buyer price.

GST Inclusive price is the total price the buyer pays, which already includes the GST component. If you know the final price and want to find out how much was tax, you use the "Remove GST" mode — dividing by (1 + GST rate) to extract the base amount.

GST Formula

Add GST (Exclusive → Inclusive)

GST Amount = Price × GST Rate

Final Price = Price + GST Amount

Remove GST (Inclusive → Exclusive)

Base Price = Price ÷ (1 + GST Rate)

GST Amount = Price − Base Price

GST for Ecommerce Sellers

Every Indian ecommerce seller selling through Amazon, Flipkart, Meesho, or their own D2C website is required to register for GST if their annual turnover exceeds ₹40 lakhs (₹20 lakhs for services). Marketplaces collect GST at the point of sale under the Tax Collected at Source (TCS) framework.

The GST rate you charge depends on the HSN (Harmonised System of Nomenclature) code of your product. Incorrect GST rates can result in compliance issues during GST return filing. Use this calculator to quickly verify the GST component in any quoted price.

GST Impact on Profit

GST does not directly reduce your profit if you are GST-registered — the tax you collect from buyers is paid to the government, and the tax you pay on business inputs (purchases, logistics, packaging) is available as Input Tax Credit (ITC).

Your actual revenue is the base price (the price excluding GST). When pricing products, always calculate your margin on the base price, not the final price including GST. A product listed at ₹1,180 with 18% GST only gives you ₹1,000 in revenue — GST of ₹180 belongs to the government.
