Understanding Etsy Seller Fees
Etsy charges sellers in four ways. The listing fee is a flat charge each time you publish or renew a product. The transaction fee is a percentage of the total order value including shipping. The payment processing fee covers the cost of handling card payments securely. Advertising fees are optional but can significantly impact your margins if you use Etsy Ads or Offsite Ads.
Understanding each fee type helps you price your products correctly and identify where your costs can be reduced. Many Etsy sellers underestimate total fees and either underprice or set unrealistic margin expectations.
Etsy Listing Fee
Every time you create or renew a listing on Etsy, you pay a $0.20 listing fee. Listings are active for four months. After that, Etsy automatically renews them for another $0.20 unless you disable auto-renewal. When you sell a quantity greater than one from a single listing, Etsy charges an additional $0.20 renewal fee for each unit sold beyond the first. For sellers with high sales volume, these listing renewal fees add up across hundreds or thousands of transactions.
Etsy Transaction Fee
Etsy charges a 6.5% transaction fee on the total order value. This includes both the item price and the shipping amount charged to the buyer. For example, if you sell an item for $40 and charge $5 shipping, Etsy takes 6.5% of $45, which is $2.93. This means sellers who charge for shipping are still paying Etsy a cut of that shipping revenue. It is worth factoring this into your pricing or considering free shipping strategies.
Etsy Payment Processing Fee
When you use Etsy Payments (the default payment system), Etsy charges 3% of the order value plus a $0.25 fixed fee per transaction. PayPal charges 2.9% plus $0.30 per transaction. These fees are deducted from your payout and vary by country. For sellers with low average order values, the fixed portion of the payment fee can represent a disproportionately large percentage of revenue. Bundling items or encouraging larger orders helps reduce the effective payment fee rate.
Etsy Advertising Fees
Etsy offers two advertising products. Etsy Ads is an optional on-platform advertising program. You set a daily budget, and Etsy shows your listings in search results and across Etsy. You pay per click, and there is no guaranteed return on spend. It works best for listings with good conversion rates and competitive pricing.
Offsite Ads is a program where Etsy advertises your products on external platforms like Google Shopping, Facebook, and Instagram. If a buyer clicks one of these ads and purchases within 30 days, Etsy charges 15% of the order value as an advertising fee. Sellers who made over $10,000 in the past year qualify for a reduced 12% rate. Offsite Ads can drive significant sales volume but the fee is substantial and must be built into your pricing.
